Question and Answers from Officer Involved Shooting Press Conference (Unofficial)

DISCLAIMER:  This is not an official transcript of what was said.  This is just my notes that I was able to take down while I was in the meeting.

Mayor called the press conference to order at 12:30 PM

He explained that the investigation is being expedited but it may take several weeks

The mayor briefly addressed the timeline:

    1. EMS dispatched and arrived within 4 minutes within the call
    2. Mr. Gunn was pronounced dead at the scene shortly thereafter

Immediately following the shooting all information was turned over to the SBI (State Bureau of Investigation)

The brother of Mr. Gunn requested 5 minutes of silence for his brother. The mayor granted him 5 minutes.

Storm Water Fee – Why I Voted Against It

On Tuesday, the city council voted on an ordinance to levy storm water on parcels of property located with the corporate limits of the city of Montgomery. The city of Montgomery is required under Federal and State regulations to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge and Elimination System (NPDES) permit for storm-water discharges from the public Municipal Separate Storm Sewer (MS4). This coupled along with Act Number 2014-439 passed by the Alabama Legislature which gave any governing body to create and establish a funding mechanism to aid local storm water management programs in meeting financial obligations imposed by Federal and State regulations, the city found that it was in the best interests of the citizens of the City of Montgomery for there to be a Storm-water Management Program Fund.

The amount of the fee will be $0.005 per square feet for commercial properties up to $3,000. It will be a flat $10 for residential properties. The basis for selecting the properties to which the additional fee will be assessed is based on whether or not you currently are paying property taxes. Click here to see the complete ordinance.

The ordinances passed by a 6-2 vote with one councilman abstaining. I was one of the dissenting votes. I chose to vote against it for the following reasons:

    Update on Vaughn Road Park

Prior to C.C. Calhoun leaving office, he commissioned the repaving of the walkway in Vaughn Road Park and the replacing of some of the playground equipment. The approximate cost was $95,000. The money has already been transferred into the account and the head of the parks and recreation department is aware or the funds. Currently, they are waiting on the ground to be hard enough to replace the walkway. Also, Calhoun picked out playground equipment prior to leaving. The old playground equipment was removed because it was dangerous and in need of repair.

    Vaughn 9
I will update you on the status as we move forward. Thank you for your patience as we move forward. My 4 year old is eagerly awaiting its repair. She is putting a lot of pressure on me to get this done.

    Should We Support Religious Freedom

    kimdavisQUESTION (Anonymous):
Will I will keep this short because I have to run off to work in a few minutes. Here is why I don’t post about the Kim in Kentucky issue. Christianity is on the decline in America. I don’t like it but that is a fact. Islam is on the rise in America. I don’t like it but that is a fact. If we allow exceptions for religious reasons we will come up on the short end of this stick at the not to distant future. Just my two cents. Curious what you think about this line of reasoning.

    Proposed City Ordinance

In order to get in front of this gay marriage issue, I am proposing the following ordinance:

    Freedom from Force Act:
No one can be forced against their will to participate or acknowledge any act that goes against their religious beliefs; nor should they be able to refuse to provide a service or product to any individual if in doing so does not force them to participate or acknowledge any act.

The city will provide alternate workers with signing authority in positions where providing such services would violate one’s first amendment rights.
