    City of Montgomery announces program offering jobs to local youth

    Montgomery youth ages 17-21 can apply online to gain experience and earn money working for the City beginning April 11 at 5 p.m.

    Eligible participants must live within Montgomery city limits and be at least 17 years old and no older than 21 as of May 31, 2016. Potential participants must provide two letters of recommendation including one from a school official and another from a community leader who can provide verification of the student’s involvement in service or extracurricular activities. Community leaders include neighborhood association officers, faith-based leaders, coaches or nonprofit and youth service providers.

    MONTGOMERY – The City of Montgomery today launched the 2016 City of Montgomery Summer Jobs Program, a pilot program designed to offer job opportunities to Montgomery youth ages 17-21 years old to work 20-30 hours per week as office staff, light laborers, staff assistants, recreation counselors and other positions as needed.

    “It’s a win-win situation,” Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange said. “While the city benefits by bringing eager young men and women on staff for the summer to help with everyday duties and special projects, the participants will learn life skills and shoulder increased responsibility that translates to being better prepared for the next school year or entering the workforce.”

    “Each summer we have a variety of needs, and our goal with this program is to engage Montgomery’s youth by providing good paying jobs that result in new skills, interests or vocations while cultivating and furthering their education and preparing them for careers,” Chief of Staff Anita Archie said. “Ranging from jobs within Parks and Recreation, the Museum, Zoo or even at City Hall, these young men and women will learn how city government works and what possible future careers exist, while having a productive experience during the summer.”

    Work for participants begins on June 6 and ends July 15. Pay is set at $7.50 per hour, and paychecks will be issued every two weeks.

    Applicants can visit www.montgomeryal.gov beginning at 5 p.m. on April 11 to complete an online application. Once applications are received and reviewed, those fulfilling the essential criteria will be granted an interview in late May. Registration ends at 4 p.m. on April 29.
